Boxer Scott Brookes, 20, dies after road accident

A PROMISING young South Yorkshire boxing star has died in hospital after being hit by a taxi.

Scott Brookes, aged 20, from Mexborough, was in Rotherham General Hospital following the collision on Rowms Lane, Swinton, at around 1.10am yesterday.

Police this afternoon confirmed he died at 12.40pm today.

It is understood doctors and Scott's family had been due to make the heartbreaking decision whether to turn off his life support machine today.

South Yorkshire Police said a 20-year-old Mexborough man had suffered "life-threatening head injuries" after being struck by a taxi driven by a 39-year-old Kimberworth man.

Scott's promoter Dennis Hobson confirmed it was the young cruiserweight star.

The young boxer has a huge South Yorkshire following and is a close friend and stablemate of Sheffield boxer Clinton Woods who is currently in America preparing to defend his light heavyweight world title on April 14.

Scott's older brother Stuart, 25, is also a well known boxer and both brothers enjoyed a strong and vocal following whenever they fought.

Pedestrian Scott was in the road when the collision happened but police are still investigating the incident.

Dennis, who now has the hard task of breaking the news to world title hopeful Clinton, described Scott as a "lovely lad" and said he was devastated by the news.

"It is going to be a terrible thing having to tell Clinton.

"Scott was the more boisterous of the two brothers, a lovely lad, who we rated as a genuine prospect," he said.

He described Scott, a labourer by trade, as being in "incredible shape" and said the youngster had been busy preparing for his next fight.

"All our thoughts are with his family," said Dennis.

Older brother Stuart, a middleweight fighter, last fought in Sheffield two weeks ago.

Rookie Scott had won all of his four professional fights, taking on opponents in Sheffield, Rotherham and Mexborough.

His most recent fixture was in November 2007 when he beat Sheffield boxer Carl Wild at Hellaby Hall hotel.

Police today asked witnesses to yesterday's collision to call their witness helpline on 0114 2202970.
