Bosom Buddies walk for Sandra

THERE'S nothing beats a nice walk in the countryside – especially when you're in the company of friends.

And this lot aren't just friends – they're Bosom Buddies.

Friends and family of cancer victim Sandra Rush gathered in North Anston to take part in Rush to Walk with Bosom Buddies – a sponsored walk in her memory.

Sandra, a former nurse from Conisbrough, lost her battle with breast cancer in 2002 aged 44, leaving husband John and daughter Natalie.

Since the tragedy, friends and relatives have organised three sponsored walks to raise money to help other cancer patients.

The first two walks raised a staggering 44,000 and organisers of the third – a 10-mile sponsored event around the Anston area – are confident it will add thousands to the total.

Organiser Gillian Headon, of Mexborough, said: "We were all devastated when we lost Sandra, we saw what she went through and felt we needed to do something to help other people in that situation.

"We were staggered at how much we managed to raise at the first two, and hopefully we can match that at this next one."

At least half of the money raised will go to the Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice in Dinnington, which now supports more than 80 terminally ill children.

The remaining money will be divided between the Chatham Suite Rotherham Breast Screening Centre, the Urology Department at Rotherham Hospital, Rotherham Breast Cancer Support Group and the Aurora Centres at Montagu Hospital and Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
