Bookworms shun games for classics of literature - VIDEO

Waiting for Video...

IN a generation ruled by TV and video games, four young South Yorkshire lads have chosen to embrace a more classical hobby – reading.

Tom Donnelly, Oliver Kirk, Leo Reynolds and Keiron Loombe, all 10, have taken their love of books one step further and started their own book club.

“All our mums are in books clubs, so we decided to start one,” said founder Tom Donnelly.

The boys, all in the same class at Bradfield Primary School, have read dozens of books together.

Their favourite is Michael Murpurgo’s classic War Horse, which has been made into a film, directed by Steven Speilberg and opens in cinemas across the UK today.

“We went to watch Michael Murpurgo at The Crucible, reading bits of War Horse aloud, with all the voices and expression – it was great,” said Tom, of Bradfield Dale.

“He signed our books and we told him all about our club. We can’t wait to see the film!”

The visit to the Crucible is not the only trip the boys have taken together.

Last summer, after finishing the Harry Potter books, they visited Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, one of the locations from the films.

Oliver, of Oughtibridge, the club’s resident Harry Potter expert, said: “The great thing about the club is the books it’s made me read, that I might not have done otherwise.

“Our meetings are always really lively with lots of discussion before we pick our next book, from a list of library recommendations.”

The meetings were so lively the boys introduced ‘Molly the Dolly’ to keep order.

“We used to chatter over each other,” said Leo, of Dungworth.

“Now only the person holding Molly can share their thoughts and ideas.”
