Bookmaker job losses 'will see workers sold down the river'
MORE jobs are under threat in Sheffield - this time at bookmaker William Hill's customer services and e-commerce department.
The operations, which employ 70 people at sites in Sheffield and Leeds, have been taken over by Israeli company Playtech which will run them on the UK company's behalf.
Neither site is closing but some posts are being relocated to centres abroad, at locations including Gibraltar.
One worker at the Sheffield site, in Charter Row, in the city centre, said: "Employees have worked hard to help the company, its executives and shareholders to enjoy a profitable 2008 despite the current financial troubles. Some of them have been with the company many years and are being sold down the river."
William Hill said "a handful" of staff are being affected, who are being offered the chance to move to Gibraltar or seek redundancy. "We are in a consultation process and alternative jobs are being offered," a spokesman said.
About 50 job losses have been announced in recent days, 26 at Dixons' call centre off Sheffield Parkway, and 24 at the Meadowhall branch of music store Zavvi.
