REPORTS of an unexploded bomb which caused rush-hour traffic chaos around part of Sheffield proved to be a false alarm.

An item found on the bank of the River Don, near Leppings Lane, Hillsborough, sparked the alert and the area was sealed off.

Army bomb disposal officers were called from Chilwell, near Nottingham, but found the item was harmless.

The cordon was lifted at about 5.45pm - but not before huge traffic jams had built-up.
