Blunkett sees green scheme

AN ALLOTMENT project which helps people with learning difficulties to grow their own food was visited by Sheffield MP David Blunkett.

He called in at the Trade Base Allotments in Windmill Lane, Wincobank, to show his support for the project after it was targeted by vandals earlier this year.

Mr Blunkett, who represents Brightside and is a member of the allotment, said: "It is a terrible shame that a handful of local loonies have actually been involved in vandalising the allotments and even made an attempt at arson.

"You do wonder sometimes whether we should have closed Middlewood mental hospital when here in our community we have such tremendous work undermined and made more difficult by those who are so far off the wall as to be beyond contempt."

He described the allotments as a "splendid project which links those with learning disabilities to those with a commitment to growing their own food and improving the local environment."

Trade Base development worker Andrea Hardy said: "It was a pleasure to welcome David along to see the work."
