Blind youngsters on the right track for future success in athletics

ON your marks, get set... go.

Paralympians of the future came under starters orders in Sheffield – and they were quick to show off their athletic abilities.

Around 120 blind and partially-sighted children aged from four to 16, came from all around the country to annual North Actionnaires Inter-Club Athletics Competition, at the English Institute of Sport, Coleridge Road, Attercliffe.

The budding athletes represented 13 cities from across the north of England in events including the 60m, 800m, 1500m, standing long jump, verticle jump, javelin, shot putt and mixed club relay.

Sheffield MP David Blunkett is a great supporter of the event.

He said: "Actionnaires is a fantastic initiative.

"I was lucky to have access to sport as a child but for the majority of blind and partially-sighted children in mainstream schools, this isn't the case.

"The benefits of sport are huge, not only does it encourage children to live a healthy lifestyle, it is also a confidence booster for kids."
