A car engulfed in flames rolled down a Sheffield street and crashed into a parked vehicle in a suspected arson attack.

Police are treating the fire on Edge Well Rise, Birley Edge, as ‘suspicious’ and urged anyone with information about the incident on Sunday morning to come forward.

There have been at least 11 other suspected arson attacks, damaging around 15 vehicles in the streets surrounding Edge Well Crescent and Fox Hill Crescent since the beginning of the year.

One angry resident said: “At what point is something going to be done about this?

“At some point, one of these cars is going to go into a home and torch a house as well. Does someone have to lose their life before something is done? I can’t believe it’s carried on for this length of time.”

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “We treat all acts of arson extremely seriously and are working closely with South Yorkshire Police to identify those responsible and to prevent further instances occurring.

“Incidents such as these take up a large amount of our resources. These fires have the potential to spread to properties and could put lives at risk.”
