Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre reported its busiest day of the year – as shoppers flocked to take advantage of special offers.
Black Friday was the busiest day of the year so far, while an extra 200,000 visitors were expected through the centre’s doors over the weekend, as stores offered promotions and discounts to draw in the pre-Christmas custom, coupled with payday for many people.
Darren Pearce, centre director, said: “There has been a wonderful festive atmosphere in the centre over the weekend.
“We feel this is attributed to our fabulous retail and leisure line-up, as well as the brilliant range of special Black Friday discounts.”
Black Friday is the Friday after the American festival of Thanksgiving, when many people take the day off work to start their Christmas shopping.
Meadowhall has also welcomed a number of new arrivals to the centre in recent months, including Victoria’s Secret, CelebBoutique and The North Face which opened just last week, which has helped boost trade.
Mr Pearce said the centre’s sales were expected to increase by more than 25 per cent at the weekend, compared with the weekend before.
He said: “All signs are pointing to a very buoyant Christmas trading period this year.”
Online retailers are also looking forward to an annual pre-Christmas boost today, known as Cyber Monday – the busiest online shopping day of the year, with a predicted 113 million visits to online stores from UK internet shoppers alone.
However, with weak growth in most of the retail sector, retailers are expected to wage an online battle of sales and price cuts for a larger share of the day’s predicted £5 billion spend.
