Bishop of Hallam joins calls to end Roma misery

The Bishop of Hallam has joined Amnesty International’s call for an end to the persecution of Roma communities in Romania.

The Rt Rev John Rawsthorne is among 23 faith leaders to sign a joint letter addressed to the mayor of Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania - a city which Amnesty International has accused of being a hub of anti-Roma prejudice.

Amnesty International warns that across Romania, Roma communities are being forced from their homes without consultation and moved miles away from basic services like schools, health services and public transport.

Kate Allen of Amnesty International said: “Faith plays such an important role right across Europe and we’re delighted that so many religious figures in the UK have chosen to make this stand.”
