A benefits fraudster who claimed almost £13,000 he wasn’t entitled to has escaped an immediate jail term.

Ricki Brooks, aged 25, claimed housing benefit, council tax benefit and job seeker’s allowance while failing to declare that he was working as a bingo caller.

Brookes, of John Street, Creswell, Derbyshire, admitted the offences at Worksop Magistrates’ Court.

He was told to carry out 250 hours unpaid work and pay a £60 victim surcharge and costs of £40.

He must also repay the benefits.

Bolsover District Council’s cabinet member for customer services, Coun Rose Bowler said: “Thirteen thousand pounds is a lot of money – money which this person was not entitled to. We will catch up with you.”
