PICKETS turned out to stop bin lorries leaving their depots this morning as the first of six strike days in Doncaster got underway.
Members of the union Unite are on strike over pay, because they are unhappy that refuse collectors working for Sita in Kirklees are paid £1 an hour more than their equivalent staff in Doncaster, who work for the same firm.
Sita says the union’s pay claim for a 13 per cent increase is too much and it cannot justify a rise of more than 1.7 per cent in the current climate.
Dozens gathered outside the depot on Whittington Street, carrying union flags and blocking the entrance to prevent lorries leaving.
They will be striking again on Monday, and then again on the following two Fridays and Mondays.
Managers and staff from other areas had been asked to drive the vehicles.
