Former Doncaster Rovers goal ace Billy Sharp has formed a new partnership in the battle against the condition which claimed the life of his newborn son.
The player set up the Luey Jacob Sharp Foundation in honour of the baby and the organisation has now partnered with Sparks to set up the Gastroschisis Research Fund.
The LJS Foundation was set up by Billy, now with Reading, and his partner Jade Fair in January 2012 after their son died as a result of the condition, aged just two days old. Sharp famously dedicated his goal for Rovers against Middlesbrough to his son days after his death.
He said: “I’m very proud Sparks have agreed to partner with the Luey Jacob Sharp Foundation. Research into gastroschisis is something very close to my heart. The pain of losing your child is almost unbearable. The partnership will allow us both to reach out to medical researchers who want to improve outcomes for gastroschisis, with the aim of ensuring no family has to endure what Jade and I have.”
