A young Sheffield widow’s most treasured possession is to be raffled off for charity - in memory of her husband.
The giant teddy bear holding a red love heart reading ‘I love you’ was a special Valentine’s Day gift from the young husband to the love of his life.
Now the woman - who wishes to remain anonymous - has donated the bear to Stroke Association Support, which is helping her rebuild her life.
Charity supporter Jay McGreneghan has stepped in to transport all her possessions to Belgium, in his Volkswagen Caddy Mk1, over the Bank Holiday weekend.
“The lady donated her late husband’s possessions to the association before leaving the country to join her nearest family member,” he said.
“I’ll be taking her things and I’ll be joined in the passenger seat by the giant bear.
“She wants it to go to a good home and so she’s supporting my idea to raffle off the bear for a lucky winner in time for next Valentine’s Day.”
Jay is running the raffle with the help of www.justgiving.com/peoplescar, his fundraising webpage.
The Belgium trip is being sponsored by Bio Fuels UK, which will power the Volkswager with recycled cooking oil.
And the Channel crossing is being supported by DFDS Seaways, which is providing ferry crossings.
He added: “We hear lots of sad stories from people donating their loved ones’ possessions to Stroke Association Support.
“This lady’s life has been turned upside down with the sudden loss of her husband. When I suggested the idea to use the teddy bear to help raise funds and awareness, her smile said it all.”
