BetVictor cut Lewis Hamilton from 7/4 to 11/10 to be named BBC Sports Personality of the Year after defending Tour De France champion Chris Froome was forced to pull out of his bid for back-to-back successes yesterday.
Spokesperson Charlie McCann said: “One could argue Hamilton is currently four points behind in a two-horse race with Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in his bid to secure a second F1 Drivers’ Championship.
“But it would be also fair to say that the Sports Personality of the Year award doesn’t look as if it will take too much winning in 2014.
“Steven Gerrard was as short as 8/13 before his slip against Chelsea at Anfield went a long way to gifting Manchester City the Premier League title and, unless a golfer comes to prominence in Royal Liverpool at next week’s Open or at Carnoustie for the Ryder Cup in September, Hamilton looks a worthy favourite for an award he has twice finished as runner up in 2007 and 2008.”
BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014 odds: Lewis Hamilton 11/10, Jonny Wilkinson 5/1, Carl Froch 7/1, Lizzy Yarnold 12/1, Rory McIlroy 16/1, Mo Farah 16/1.
