Benefits from new rail lines

A RAIL company estimates that construction of the new high speed network could take 500,000 HGV lorry journeys off motorways including the M1.

WSP, a rail consultancy firm, said the new lines would lead to environmental benefits worth over £45m annually, saving over 65,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

The Government is due to publish the route of the network north of Birmingham, including Sheffield, later this month in an announcement delayed from December.
