A DEMONSTRATION is being held in Sheffield today against reassessment of disability benefits.
Members of Sheffield Green Party, Sheffield Justice for All and Sheffield Anti-Cuts Alliance are all participating in the protest from noon to 3pm as part of a national day of action.
They will stage a picnic in Hartshead Square outside the offices of company ATOS, which has won a £300 million government contract for the reassessment of people on disability benefits.
Green Party spokesman Peter Garbutt said: “The Government claims the purpose of the assessments is to test what people can do, rather than what they can’t. But the real purpose is to strip much needed benefits from as many people as possible.
“This has already led to people with terminal illnesses and severe medical conditions being declared fit for work and having benefits cut.”
