Beloved pub landlord 'Butch' dies, 64

A LEGENDARY Sheffield pub landlord who served behind the bar for almost half a century has lost his battle against lung cancer, at the age of just 64.

Harvey 'Butch' Watkins died at his home in Chapeltown. He had returned the day before after five weeks in the Northern General Hospital.

He was diagnosed just before Christmas, after suffering ill health since standing down from his job as landlord of The Salutation pub in High Green.

He leaves wife Maureen, his daughter Anna and husband Tim, daughter Sally and husband Steve, and son Martin and wife Louisa, and six grandchildren.

His first wife Jennifer, the daughter of a former Salutation landlord, died just over a year after Butch took over the pub. He married Maureen 12 years ago and they ran the pub until he retired in 2008.

Anna said the family was devastated, particularly since he deteriorated so quickly: "He will be very sadly missed.

"He was such a well-liked chap and one of the best-loved landlords, he had a heart of gold and he would do anything for anybody."

The funeral has yet to be arranged. Inquiries can be made with Co-operative Funeral Directors in Chapeltown on 0114 246 7971. Family flowers only, with donations in lieu to the Chesterman heart and lung ward at the Northern General.
