Beer chosen for Christmas pudding role

AN AWARD-WINNING Peak District brewery is launching a new ale this week – and had one of its beers chosen to be included in a top-of-the-range Christmas pudding.

Thornbridge, based at Thornbridge Hall, Great Longstone, is launching its new tipple Raven on Thursday.

Despite being of the India Pale Ale variety, the beer is black in colour.

It has been created by James Kemp, 2008 New Zealand Home Brewing Champion, who moved to Britain to join the brewery a few months ago.

He said: "I wanted to brew a dark beer as strong as an IPA with as much bitterness and hop character but with the extra bonus of specialty malt flavours that are in dark beers, very complex, loads of flavour and really interesting".

The beer has been produced for this month's Chesterfield Campaign for Real Ale beer festival on Friday and Saturday as part of Chesterfield Market Festival.

Thornbridge has also agreed a deal to supply its St Petersburg Stout for use by the world's oldest Christmas pudding maker, Matthew Walker, in its recipe.

Brewery director Simon Webster said: "We knew they prided themselves on sourcing the very best ingredients from around the world so for them to choose our Saint Petersburg Stout to complete the traditional recipe was a great accolade".

The stout has also been awarded a silver medal in the International Bottled Beer Challenge, one of the world's premier beer competitions.
