FOOTBALLER David Beckham kick-started a Rotherham teenager’s birthday celebrations when he agreed to meet him before a training session in Los Angeles.
The former Manchester United star, who now plays for LA Galaxy, agreed to meet Will Kitching when the 16-year-old’s dad wrote to him asking for a quick chat with the teenager on their holiday.
Will’s dad Gary, aged 50, explained that his son was recovering from a serious eating disorder, which saw his weight plummet to six stone, following a remark about his weight made by a football coach.
The youngster, from Maltby, is now recovering and training with Sheffield United’s development squad.
Gary said: “Will is a talented footballer and a coach simply said to him that he needed to lose a little bit of weight.
“It was not meant maliciously but it had a dramatic effect on Will and he developed an eating disorder.
“I was so proud of the way Will has overcome his illness and I wanted to plan something special for his birthday.
“David is one of the most famous people in the world and has so many commitments so I couldn’t believe it when I got a letter back saying he would be delighted to have a chat.”
Will, a sixth former at Maltby Academy, said: “He signed my golden boots and asked me who I played for. It was a dream come true and it was a birthday I will never forget.”
