A FURRY friend will be meeting youngsters at a fun event to encourage more children to take up reading.

Bookstart Bear will be a special guest when Sheffield library service holds a beach party in the Peace Gardens on Tuesday, August 23, between 10am and 4pm.

He joined Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Coun Sylvia Dunkley, and Diane Kostka, from the library service, to promote the event.

Bookstart said: “I’d encourage youngsters and their parents to come along and have some fun - and find out more about what their local library has to offer.”

Children and their families are invited to come along with their buckets and spades to the specially-created beach, which has been set up by the council for the whole of August.

Activities taking place there, organised by the library service, include a toddler session led by Bookstart Bear, a treasure hunt and other library-themed activities.

The Little Library vehicle - a children’s mobile library - will be there with books available to borrow.
