BBC 1Xtra Live at Sheffield Arena
BONKERS!
That was the audience – who went crazy when rap superstar Dizzee Rascal headlined BBC 1Xtra Live at Sheffield Arena.
They jumped, shouted and cheered to the mad beat as the Boy In Da Corner hitmaker sang hits including number ones Dance Wiv Me, Holiday and Bonkers, from new album Tongue N Cheek.
It could have been even louder.
But, by the time he came on, many fans at this 11,000-strong pop party had already lost their voices – screaming their heads off for support act JLS, complete with Aston Merrygold backflips. Also on the bill were Sugababes, Tinchy Stryder, Taio Cruz, Chipmunk, Jay Sean, Chase N Status, Kano and Donae'o.
It was BBC 1Xtra's biggest ever line up of home grown acts representing the best of British black urban music, featuring rap, hip hop, grime, bassline, garage, dubstep, drum and bass, house and R&B.
Radio stars Trevor Nelson and Mistajam hosted the show live on Radio 1 and 1Xtra digital - with DJ Tim Westwood on stage. The all free tickets were snapped up weeks ago.
Many turned up just to see heartthrobs JLS, Britain's top new boyband, who performed chart-topping singles Beat Again and Everybody In Love.
In a backstage video chat with The Star – which can be seen on line – fab four Oritse Williams, Marvin Humes, Aston Merrygold and Jonathan Gill, thanked local fans for an "amazing year". They look forward to playing Sheffield City Hall on February 7, 2010.
Oritse said: "Everyone is so supportive and really behind us. It's an incredible feeling to come to places like Sheffield. Thank you so much."
Troubled trio Sugababes, who had been criticised by some for continuing after the departure of final original member, Keisha Buchanan, got a warm welcome. Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and new girl, former Eurovision entrant, Jade Ewen, sang top 10 hit Get Sexy, from forthcoming seventh studio album, Sweet 7.
Sugababe Amelle returned to duet chart-topping hit, Never Leave You, with pop rapper Tinchy Stryder, who plays Sheffield 02 Academy on February 6, it was announced today.
He also got Taio Cruz up to duet their smash hit, Take Me Back.
Singer-songwriter Cruz, aged 24, who has produced for Sugababes, Cheryl Cole and Kylie Minogue, sang number one, Break Your Heart.
The full show, including build up and backstage interviews, is on the BBC iPlayer until Saturday, December 5, 2009.
Filmed highlights are on BBC Three tonight, Monday, November 30, at 7.50pm.
