SOUTH Yorkshire motorists have been warned that as many as a quarter of car batteries could fail in freezing weather.

CTEK, a vehicle battery company, estimates as many as 25 per cent of vehicles have a battery that could potentially fail when the freezing weather strikes.

The company also estimates that around half of car batteries are undercharged.

Peter White, of CTEK, said: “Motorists are lulled into a false sense of security when it comes to the state of their battery during the warmer months.

“If the battery is undercharged during this period it will still probably be able to start the vehicle as it doesn’t need as much energy to get the engine going. Motorists won’t realise that their battery is undercharged.”
