Sheffield Sharks have recently launched a new and exciting hub clubs project in conjunction with the BBL Foundation, Sport England and Sheffield Hallam University.

The project will establish six community hub clubs supported by the Sharks (and funding from the Basketball Foundation) targeting new, old and returnees to participate in the sport in what essentially are structured, but fun sessions. The sessions are open to the entire community.

Two clubs have already been launched at Parkwood Academy, Shirecliffe and Stocksbridge High School in Sheffield and further clubs are to be launched after the Easter break.

The Sharks will have Sheffield Hallam University scholars and players such as Nick Lewis, Colin Sing and George Brownell coaching in the hub club program, complemented by qualified students in Sports Coaching at Sheffield Hallam University.

The Hub Club at Stocksbridge High School will be coached by former Stocksbridge School pupil Marko Backovic, who having represented England at a number of junior levels is now in the Sheffield Sharks squad and a product of the Junior Sharks programme.

“The emphasis is on developing skills, having fun and eventually building a community club for all ages, all genders, and abilities,” said Joel Mills, Hub Club Project Manager at the Sharks. “Many people want to play for fun and those who want to play competitively, will be given the opportunity to compete in the local Central Venue Leagues.”

Sessions will be charged at an introductory £2, but for pupils attending the schools which are hosting the Hub Club, sessions will be free.

“This really is an opportunity for anyone wanting to try basketball, or return to basketball, to come and stretch their legs, get active and have fun, without having to travel a long way,” added Joel. “We really would like to see as many girls and women come and try the sport and whilst sessions are mixed, we do have a female only session to build confidence.”
