Volunteers from Barnsley’s Home-Start have received a High Sheriff award recognising their work.

The award, given by the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, acknowledges unsung heroes of the region for their volunteer work.

The High Sheriff, Lady Sykes, was impressed by the number of volunteers involved and the wide range of services on offer.

Barnsley’s Home-Start is part of a national charity which depends on its volunteers to provide support and friendship for families.

Manager Lynn Brown said Home-Start is a warm, welcome and befriending organisation.

“We have a total of 95 fully-trained volunteers, all of whom are vital to the work we do,” she said.

“People with disabilities, living alone, parenting young children, suffering bereavement and coping with multiple births all come under the Home-Start banner.”
