A Barnsley footballer got a kick out of returning to his old school to talk to students about his journey to professional football.

Marc Roberts, a Barnsley FC defender, went back to his roots when he visited Barnsley College’s Sport department.

The 25-year-old, who studied sport at the college, returned to the Honeywell campus to speak to students at the college’s Sports Fair, which introduced youngsters from the college to the sporting opportunities open to them.

He spoke about his experiences at college and how his career has progressed.

Marc said: “The students had plenty of questions about how I found studying at college and how I got to where I am now.

“My time at college was important and I developed most as a footballer during those years.

“I went to university after college so I emphasised the importance of education to the students, even for those who want to pursue a sporting career.

“I am really impressed by the world class sports facilities and I would fully recommend the college to anyone.”

Mark Ryan, Sport Programme Manager at the college, added: “Marc was an excellent student who worked extremely hard as an academic and a footballer.

“His work ethic is something that has never left him and his journey is an inspiration to all young people.

“Marc has continued to stay in touch with us at college and it’s absolutely fantastic when you see ex-students achieve and progress as Marc has into professional football.”
