Barbecue bins have been installed in Sheffield’s Devonshire Green – which was blighted by litter left by summer revellers last year.
Phil the Bin, the city’s anti-littering mascot, paid a visit to the park to urge picnickers to look out for the shiny steel bins which are in place across green spaces and use them to dispose of barbecues and hot coals safely.
Last year, residents and businesses were angered by piles of rubbish abandoned on the green following hot weather. More than 500 tonnes of waste is collected across the city every month and people are urged to dispose of it properly.
Darren Butt, operations director for the council’s Streets Ahead team, said: “If everyone disposed of their litter responsibly, then we could ensure it is a better place for everyone to live in.”
