A BANK manager turned sandwich maker for the day when she created an award-winning snack.

Debbie Cundy, manager of HSBC at Tankersley, won catering firm Sodexo Prestige’s British Sandwich Week competition to find the best new filling in England and Wales.

Debbie created the ‘Peppery Joe’ - a smoked mackerel fillet on bloomer bread with cress, rocket and crispy bacon.

The competition was launched to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the sandwich, and 60 sarnie lovers from the corporate catering firm entered their creations.

Mark Parfait, head of food operations at Sodexo Prestige, said: “This is the first time we have run a competition such as this and it was great to see the response we got.

“The creation of each of the sandwiches that were judged showed thought and creativity and it was a hard decision to pick the winning sandwich.

“Each entry deserves a special mention and we look forward to many more entries next year.”

British Sandwich Week is an annual event celebrating the much-loved British institution.

It is believed the humble sarnie dates back to 9000 BC but it took 10,000 years and the celebrity of the 4th Earl of Sandwich to give it a name.

The sandwich has become a staple of the diet since its beginnings in the 18th century when it was typically used as a supper food at society balls.
