Bank in court over access
MONEYBAGS Royal Bank of Scotland faces court action for refusing to install disabled access at its branch on Church Street in Sheffield city centre.
The bank is happy to pay handsomely to operate out of prestigious listed premises next to the Cutler's Hall.
But it's refusing to cough up to meet its responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act.
That's the claim being mad by Douglas Johnson of the Disability Rights Project which is backing wheelchair user Dave Allen, aged 16, of Harley Road, Bents Green, Sheffield.
The case will be heard at Sheffield County Court on Wednesday January 23.
Douglas said: "The judge could impose an injunction on the bank forcing it to do the work. A breach would be a criminal offence. It will be very interesting to see how RBS handles this."
RBS has had permission to alter one of its entrances at Church Street for more than a year, but work has not been done. An RBS spokesman said they could not comment on court proceedings.
