BAKEWELL SHOW: A treat for all the senses - VIDEO

ALL five senses got a treat at this year's Bakewell Show with gourmet food standing alongside perfumed floral arrangements, eye-catching animals displays, squidgy sculptures and a backdrop of live music.

There were wellies galore after wet weather forecasts for the first day yesterday but Mother Nature showed her kind side and the rain stayed away.

Organisers were delighted with the crowds that started to arrive early in the morning and continued to pour through the gates throughout the day.

Car parks filled up quicker than usual and visitors were treated to a wide range of displays as well as getting the chance to sample scores of tasty treats.

The centre ring boasted everything from tug-of-war battles and heavy horse turnouts, solent eagles, the grand parade and Bakewell Band.

Other attractions around the showground including Storybag Theatre and Billy Bubbles as well as firm favourite Titan the robot who never failed to delight.

Many of the displays in the horticultural tents were festooned with rosettes and the cheese area had everything from wedding cakes to sculpture making events for children.

Some horse competitions had been held on Tuesday for the first time in the show's history but organisers played down the possibility of the main event stretching from two to three days in future years.

Honorary director Tony Lynn said everything had gone really well from the moment the gates opened and hopes it will be another record year for the show.

"We were a little bit worried that the weather forecast would put the visitors off but it hasn't. The car parks are overflowing and we are having to use the stand-by facilities," he said.

"I think that Bakewell Show is a fantastic time for town and city. We have got lots of people from the towns into a little farming community so we try and cater for everyone.

"We have got a mix of the traditional from the ponies and vegetables to things like Titan the robot."
