PLANS to bring the 2013 Rugby League World Cup to Doncaster have taken a step forward after they were backed by Mayor Peter Davies.
Shane Chalmers, chief executive of the Stadium Management Company, and Carl Hall, owner of the Doncaster Dons, say a meeting with Mr Davies went well and he pledged the council would back the bid.
Mr Chalmers said: “The meeting was extremely useful to enable us to express our hopes and aspirations to bring World Cup rugby to Doncaster.
“This follows our discussions with the RFL regarding the World Cup and we hope to be in with a chance of being among the venues given the honour of hosting a World Cup match.”
The 2013 Rugby League World Cup will be the 14th staging of the event.
The tournament will be held in the United Kingdom and hosted by England and Wales.
The Keepmoat Stadium has held England international rugby league games against France and Wales, and a challenge cup semi-final.
Carl Hall, owner of the Dons, told The Star: “We need the support of the town to make this bid work and to get the backing from the Mayor is a fantastic step forward.
“It would be a fantastic coup for the town to play a significant part in the 2013 World Cup and I am proud to be working with the SMC towards this goal.”
