Baby starts fund raising at birth
NEWBORN baby Rae-Anne Jacobs will always be remembered for her first act of kindness... helping raise almost £100 for a children's charity by having people guess her birth weight!
The idea came from Yvonne Ridgeway, a senior team member at the Mecca Bingo club in Flat Street, Sheffield, as part of the club's year-long campaign to raise funds for Whizz-Kidz, the national children's mobility charity.
Club cashier Kim Jacobs, of Netherthorpe, was expecting her second child at the beginning of July, so Yvonne thought getting club members and staff involved would be an ideal fundraiser.
Club members and staff all paid to guess Rae-Anne's birth weight and member Iris Goacher and club cleaner Sheila Ellis each won a cuddly toy and chocolates for correctly guessing 8lbs 6.5 oz.
Whizz-Kidz is a national children's mobility charity which aims to improve the independence of disabled children. Chief executive Ruth Owen said: "The charity is virtually 100 per cent reliant on voluntary funds.
"With around 70,000 kids in need of vital mobility equipment, everyone will know someone that could benefit from our work."
