Barnsley Market has scooped a national award.
The town’s market was awarded the Markets Innovation Award for the development of its smartphone app ‘My Barnsley’.
The app enables people to use their phones to pinpoint what they need to find in the market, and has proved to be so popular it has now been extended to include the whole of the town centre.
Coun Roy Miller, Cabinet spokesperson for development, environment and culture, said: “This app has been fantastic for the town’s economy as it includes the whole of Barnsley town centre, from corporate retailers to our fantastic range of small, independent shops and of course, our renowned markets.”
The app was developed using Government funding, as part of a scheme to improve town centres and high streets across the country.
Graham Wilson, Chief Executive of The National Association of British Market Authorities, who presented the award, said: “This award recognises new ideas that help the markets industry to be more successful.
“We were impressed by the Barnsley team’s enthusiasm and success.”
