Local cancer charity, Aurora Wellbeing Centres, has launched a new programme to help employers support their employees who may be affected by cancer.
Local businesses can sponsor an Aurora wellbeing treatment package in advance or if a staff member is diagnosed or caring for someone with cancer and give them the time off work to attend their appointments. If no one in the business needs to use the package throughout the year then it can be used by another man or woman who does.
“It’s a great idea, inexpensive and a nice thing to be able to do for the people you work with,” says Andy Roberts, owner of the Doncaster car dealership, Fleet Direct, who has just signed up his family firm to the Aurora Caring in Work Programme. “We have always tried to be a supportive team. It’s difficult to know how to support employees during such exceptional times and this is an opportunity to do a little bit extra.”
With one in three people being diagnosed with some form of cancer during their lifetime it is likely that someone at work will be affected. Colleagues are even clubbing together to sponsor a co-worker’s package to show their support and give them something to look forward to.
Aurora’s holistic and beauty treatments known to help improve a general feeling of wellbeing, self-esteem and confidence include reflexology, massage, reiki, skincare and hairdressing.
The charity is keen to build stronger relations with local businesses to help them to support their members of staff and the local community. As well as the Caring in Work Programme, other ways that businesses are raising funds for Aurora include adopting it as their chosen charity for the year, donating raffle prizes, attending and sponsoring charity events, and organising their own fundraising dress down days, bake sales and other sponsored activities.
The treatments offered at Aurora’s five Wellbeing Centres across Doncaster, Mexborough and Worksop are also available to everyone for a suggested donation which helps to continue the work of the charity to care for local people affected by cancer.
