When older men talk about caning in boys schools, they sink to a macho cliché like “it never did me any harm”.
However, I tend to believe what writers and broadcasters say.
The following have made critical comments.
Clive James, Billy Connolly, Nicky Campbell, John Arlott and others all speak of the rank unfairness of harsh corporal punishment.
A headmaster in one of my schools was said to cane boys who cut themselves accidentally during a woodwork class.
Need one say more.
