Artist in for portrait prize
A SHEFFIELD artist's picture of his teenage son has been shortlisted for this year's £25,000 BP Portrait Award.
More than 1,900 entries were submitted for the annual award, organised by the National Portrait Gallery and in its 30th year.
Michael Gaskell, aged 46, from Sheffield, has been shortlisted for his painting 'Tom' of his teenage son.
He spent two years working on the piece, which he began when his son was 17.
"He was at the period in adolescence between boy and manhood and fleetingly suspended between both," Michael said.
A total of 56 portraits have been chosen for the BP Portrait Award exhibition at the NPG, which runs from June 18 until September 14.
The gallery's director Sandy Nairne said: "This year's entry was of a very high quality. The shortlisted shows the range of techniques and styles that make portrait painting so exciting."
In addition to the main prize, there will also be a BP Young Artist Award of 5,000 for a work by an entrant aged 18-30.
