A man was last night being questioned by detectives on suspicion of rape following two sex attacks in Rotherham.

The 26-year-old was arrested yesterday after two women were attacked in Moorgate at the weekend.

In the first incident, a 27-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Moorgate Road at 11.30pm on Friday.

Police, who described the attack as ‘horrific’, said she was grabbed by a man, subjected to a brutal attack, and sexually assaulted.

Afterwards she was dragged on to Moorgate Road where passing members of the public intervened.

The man then fled the scene on foot.

Then, 90 minutes later, following a burglary in the same area of town, two women were physically attacked - and the younger of the two was then sexually assaulted.

Police are determining whether the attacks are linked.

A man was arrested in Moorgate, Rotherham, yesterday, and remained in police custody for questioning last night, a South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said.

Up to 50 police officers have been working on the investigation.

There were extra patrols in the area at the weekend to reassure the public, and police said their high visibility presence was set to continue.

Meanwhile officers are warning residents to remain vigilant - but reiterated such attacks are rare.

South Yorkshire Police are still appealing for witnesses to come forward. And officers have also appealed for homeowners and businesses with CCTV systems to come forward with their footage so it can be analysed.

Rotherham District Commander Chief Superintendent Jason Harwin said: “I’m grateful for the support from the public so far, and thankful to those who have phoned in with information.

But he added: “People need to remain vigilant.”

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact police on 101 quoting incident 730 of September 28.
