RESIDENTS and business owners have spoken of their shock after a village newsagents was held up by three armed robbers.

Raiders struck at Treeton News, Front Street, Treeton, at 6am on Friday as owner Jackie McMahon was sorting paper rounds.

She was confronted by three masked men brandishing crowbars who took cash from her safe and till plus cigarettes.

They hit a customer over the head as he walked in.

Jasmine Stevan, whose husband owns Nicols general store in the village, sympathised with Mrs McMahon, who took over the newsagents 14 months ago.

She said: “It is horrible to think that this kind of thing can happen here. Last year we had the same problem. Three men came into the shop while my husband was working and they were drunk and causing problems.

“They hit my husband over the head and while this was happening somebody else came in and took money from the till.

“My husband was in hospital for a day. We stepped up security then and will be doing it again.”

Zena Larkin, who runs the Xzibit hair and beauty salon on Front Street, said the robbers parked their car outside her shop.

Witnesses should call Rotherham CID on 0114 2202020.
