Armed gang targets Sheffield shops
NEWSAGENTS, post offices, off-licences and convenience stores across Sheffield are being warned to be on their guard after seven raids in the city over the last two weeks.
Detectives investigating the robberies, some of which involved criminals armed with a gun, are looking for possible links and believe one gang to be responsible for some, or possibly all, of the raids.
On four occasions - including the most recent raid at the Derbyshire Lane post office in Norton Lees on Monday - two men entered the premises brandishing a gun.
The other six raids were at the Co-op and GT News, both on Brooklands Avenue, Fulwood, GT News on Sandygate Road, Crosspool, Threshers on Nether Edge Road, Nether Edge, the Co-op on Hutcliffe Wood Road, Beauchief, and Wine Seller on Derbyshire Lane, Norton Lees.
Detectives are also looking for possible links with an eighth raid at a residential home for the elderly in Crosspool.
Det Chf Insp Steve Williams, leading the investigation, said officers are trying to visit every post office, newsagents, off-licence and convenience store in the city to warn them about the robberies.
He is also urging members of the public to be vigilant. "We are taking this very seriously because these kind of incidents are very rare in Sheffield," he said.
Anyone with information should call the West Bar police station on 0114 296 4211.
