Architecure awards for school and university
TWO new Sheffield buildings have won top awards at an annual Yorkshire ceremony designed to reward the best new architecture around.
Sheffield University's Information Commons – the library and resource centre off the Brook Hill roundabout – was named Yorkshire Building of the Year at the 2008 RIBA Yorkshire White Rose Awards for Architecture.
Also picking up a prize were design officers from Sheffield Council for their work on the rebuilt Sharrow Primary School – one of the greenest buildings in the city with a grass-covered roof.
The ceremony at Leeds Town Hall was hosted by Barnsley poet Ian McMillan who praised the overall high standard of the entries.
A bronze award was won by the new Hillsborough Park Pavilion designed by Prue Chiles Architects, while Sharrow also won a second prize for its environmentally sustainable architecture.
Newly appointed chairman of RIBA Yorkshire Geoff Ward said the region had been producing outstanding architecture for centuries.
He said: "It is great to see the city of Sheffield rewarded for its foresight in encouraging such beautiful and intelligent architectural design, showing how architecture can make day to day life better for everyone, from school children to students, bowlers to builders."
