A NEW apprenticeship scheme has been launched by Sheffield College to give talented young people a flying start to creative careers in expanding modern industries.

The project was given an official launch at the Electric Works, part of the Sheffield Digital Campus, as part of events marking National Apprenticeship Week.

It has taken on young people aged 16 to 24 who are keen to work in areas such as journalism, marketing, photography, video production, web design, festival organisation and art gallery skills.

A group of 20 apprentices based at Norton College are working on a one-year programme producing content for organisations including the Bank Street, Site and Cupola art galleries, Sheffield United and Sheffield College itself.

They receive a weekly wage in common with other apprenticeships, but, in order to respond to the needs of often smaller employers in the creative industries sector, the apprentices work on a project-by-project basis for several employers at a time.

Apprentice Andrew Campbell plans to go onto study graphic design at university.

The 18-year-old said: “It’s really valuable to get a qualification as well as work-related skills especially given the state of the economy. I’ve really enjoyed it so far.”

Matthew Neale, the college’s head of journalism, media and music, said: “We are delighted to be able to support young people and local employers in the creative industries through this new apprenticeship first for Yorkshire.

“Sheffield is a city that is renowned for its creative innovation, and we are committed to playing our part.”
