YOU’VE done it! Star readers have helped scores of elderly people struggling through the bitter winter months.
The Star’s Surviving Winter Appeal, which aims to help some of the 73,000 pensions living in fuel poverty in South Yorkshire, has smashed through its £10,000 end-of-year target.
Each November and December the Government gives most people aged over 60 a winter fuel allowance, usually of £200 a household, irrespective of how well off they are.
Little over a month ago The Star asked recipients of the grant to consider giving the money to people who needed it more.
And the response has been magnificent – The South Yorkshire Community Foundation, which is running the appeal, has received donations so far of £10,800.
Jeremy Clifford, Editor of The Star, said: “We are delighted so many people have backed the campaign to help such a vulnerable section of our community.
“We felt from the outset that the way the winter fuel allowance was distributed was unjust, which is why we decided to support the South Yorkshire Community Foundation.
“And once again the generosity of our readers has not disappointed us. Your donations will undoubtedly have gone some way to make winter more bearable for those who can least afford to heat their homes.”
Money is still coming into the South Yorkshire Community Foundation office with cheques through the post and cash donated online and via text messages.
Pauline Grice, chief executive of SYCF, said: “Last week we totted up how much had come in and we felt it would be a massive achievement to reach £10,000 by Christmas time. We are absolutely delighted to have reached it.
“Every single penny raised from generous local people by the Surviving Winter Appeal will go straight to an older person in our area who will struggle to heat their home in the coming months.”
But the campaign has not stopped yet. Donations are still needed, to make a difference to as many vulnerable people as possible.
