Anti-racism campaigners unite against BNP leader - PICTURES
ANTI-RACISM campaigners took to the streets in South Yorkshire last night as they organised a picket of a pub where the leader of the BNP was appearing.
Nick Griffin addressed a meeting of his far-right party at the Fleets pub in Smithies Lane, Barnsley, as protesters staged a demonstration outside.
His visit to the town sparked outrage from the Barnsley Trades Council and the Barnsley Unite Against Fascism group whose members came together for the picket.
Trade unionists, students, gays and lesbians, and many others, all turned out in support of the demonstration.
Trades council secretary Brian Steele said: "Barnsley has a long tradition of supporting social cohesion and solidarity. The BNP offer racism, homophobia and hatred of trade unions. We wanted to show Nick Griffin he is not welcome here."
And Sharon Stacey, secretary of Barnsley's Love Music Hate Racism, said: "LMHR wants to offer peace and friendship which is why I don't want to see the BNP in our town."
