You’ll find that life is still worthwhile, if you just SMILE.

And nine people who know that to be true are being honoured later this month by the Hospitality Sheffield Awards 2015.

The nominees have all been shortlisted for the Smile Award, based on their friendly personalities, expert customer service and welcoming smiles.

The Star is proud to be supporting the awards again this year, which celebrates the high standards of South Yorkshire’s hospitality workers.

Venue managers throughout the region have chosen their most deserving staff members - but there can be only one winner in the Smile category, and we want YOU to be the judges.

The Sheffield Smile category is one of seven that make up the annual Hospitality Sheffield Awards, this year hosted by the BBC’s Tom Ingall on October 15 at St Paul’s Mercure Hotel.

The nominees are Afzal Ahmed, food and beverage assistant at Copthorne Hotel; Beverley Jolley, breakfast supervisor at Holiday Inn Royal Victoria; Faith Phiri, food and beverage assistant at Whirlowbrook Hall; Giorgos Stefas, night manager at Hampton by Hilton; Jordan Booth, receptionist at Leopold Hotel; Mia Green, bar and restaurant supervisor at Rutland Hotel; Rosario Newnham, breakfast team member at Doubletree by Hilton Sheffield Park Hotel; Sarah Bass, spa supervisor at Tankersley Manor and Theresa Massey, GGS supervisor at Jurys Inn.

Here are the finalists with comments from their bosses and colleagues explaining why they should win:

1. Afzal Ahmed, Food and Beverage Assistant, Copthorne Hotel Sheffield

Afzal is considered the ‘heart of the business’ by all of the hotels regular guests; with his keen attention to detail, he takes time to understand his customers and great pride in knowing their individual food likes and dislikes. Fondly known as ‘Af’, he recently took on the challenge of forming a five-aside football team for the hotel, which he took on with fervour and enthusiasm to create a strong team ethos. He is dedicated to his career in the hospitality industry and represents the hotel fully with his warm and positive outlook, nothing is too much bother for Afzal!

2. Beverley Jolley, Breakfast Supervisor, Holiday Inn Royal Victoria

Bev has been a key member of the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria for over 11 years and has been an absolute star throughout her time at the hotel! Customer testaments show Bev is a warm and welcoming member of the team, always attentive and friendly to guests, whilst ensuring that the operation runs smoothly and all staff are motivated. She has a great talent for remembering regular guests and, in one case recognised a previous customer from 8 years ago, who has once again become a regular visitor to the hotel. She is an inspiration to all and takes the time to build a friendly rapport with everyone that she meets!

3. Faith Phiri, Food & Beverage Assistant, Whirlowbrook Hall

Faith can only be described as rainbows and laughter, squeezed into a bottle! With her contagious and energetic attitude, she is a truly valued member of the team and works hard to project her positive outlook onto her fellow colleagues. Not one to shy away from a task, Faith puts 110% into everything she does, whether it be a wedding or event. She is bubbling with brilliant ideas and always looks to improve practices wherever she can, which is a real strength. You might find Faith dancing in the kitchen, when she thinks she’s alone, otherwise she’ll be lighting up the hotel with her wicked smile!

4. Giorgos Stefas, Night Manager, Hampton by Hilton

Giorgos is a true rising star and has quickly established himself as a key member of the Hampton by Hilton team. Starting in the breakfast team, he has worked incredibly hard to become a fully-fledged Night Manager, all in just over a year! Always keen to develop, Giorgos took it upon himself to work through online training courses and cover shifts on the night team, in order to really get to grips with the role. He is a pleasure to work alongside and takes on the challenges of a hotel at night, without losing his winning charm. Consistently supportive to his colleagues, he welcomes new team members with delight and is an inspiration to others.

5. Jordan Booth, Receptionist, Leopold Hotel

Jordan is a very bubbly character and has a great smile, which welcomes each guest as they walk through the door. He’s a Sheffield lad, born and bred and brings this northern charm into work each day, ensuring that colleagues and guests are always warmly greeted! Jordan also has a keen interest in music, playing, writing and producing for artists all over the world, showing a natural creative flair which he brings into the hotel with him. Having previously lived in Los Angeles, Jordan returned to Sheffield, claiming that he missed the weather too much and has now firmly placed his roots in his home town.

6. Mia Green, Bar & Restaurant Supervisor, Rutland Hotel

With her truly infectious personality, Mia is known for her smile and always offers 110% whilst serving customers. Her attention to detail and great customer service is what the hotel prides itself on, and Mia represents the Rutland Hotel perfectly! With family at her heart, she brings a friendly and welcoming vibe to the hotel and works hard to make a visitors day, especially as guests are often staying whilst visiting the hospital. Currently studying for a BSC in Psychology, Mia is able to manage her studies alongside her role at the hotel without losing her famous ‘Mia Smile’!

7. Rosario Newnham, Breakfast Team Member, Doubletree by Hilton Sheffield Park Hotel

Known as Rose to her fellow colleagues, she has made a great impression in her first few months at the hotel, with her beaming smile and excellent customer service! Her persona is a punch above the rest, despite the 5am starts, and she is well loved by both guests and colleagues alike. Consistently providing a high level of customer service, Rose always starts the day with a big smile and works hard to go above and beyond, having recently served an elderly couple breakfast to their table as they were unable to access the buffet themselves. Helpful and thoughtful, Rose takes it upon herself to help out other departments, without the need to be asked, and all of this is achieved with good humour, and air of professionalism and most importantly a big smile!

8. Sarah Bass, Spa Supervisor, Tankersley Manor

Sarah started at Tankersley Manor as a Spa Therapist 12 months ago and quickly progressed to the Spa Supervisor. She provides a brilliant service to all customers, and receives fantastic feedback regarding the quality of her treatments and her overall friendly demeanour. With her gentle manner, Sarah has a natural talent for therapy and has brought joy to many a customer throughout her time at Tankersley. A real testament to her skills, Sarah has previously treated a visitor who was so pleased with her experience that she was brought to tears! Always smiling, Sarah instantly relaxes her clients and has proved to be a key member of the team.

9. Theresa Massey, GGS Supervisor, Jurys Inn

With her loud and infectious laugh, Theresa is a unique individual with a brilliant sense of humour and known by colleagues and customers alike! Having worked in the hospitality industry for over 30 years, she has a wealth of experience which means that she has truly been there and seen it all! An exceptional role model, Theresa is always there to provide advice and lend a listening ear to those in need. Along with this, she practices perfection in everything she does, ensuring that the hotel sparkles for each customer, who she treats as one of the family no matter how long their stay! She’s been noted for her helpful, assertive and knowledgeable manner, which makes her a real asset to the Jurys Inn.
