Anna on her marks

A ONE hit wonder, an ex soap actor, a sports presenter and Sheffield's own Anna Walker are among the not-so-famous faces who have been lined up to take part in the next series of city TV contest The Games.

The Channel 4 celebrity gameshow, now in its third run, will take place at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium next March.

The ten "stars" - who include Sheffield-born Anna who grew up in Millhouses - will spend a gruelling three months in intensive training with world-class sporting experts and Olympic medal winners before entering the arenas.

Competing alongside Anna to be the female champion of The Games 2005 will be sports presenter Kirsty Gallacher, rapper Lisa Maffia, Princess Tamara Czartoryski-Borbon, and comedienne Mel Giedroyc.

The male competitors are faded pop star Chesney Hawkes, ex Bread-actor Jonathon Morris, Red Dwarf actor Craig Charles, Philip Olivier and Kevin Simm.

The contest is billed as "the ultimate celebrity sporting challenge".

Before competing in the international arenas in Sheffield, the celebs will be taught a total of 18 sporting disciplines including the high dive, speed-skating and gymnastics.

New sports have also been added for the first time including sumo-wrestling, rowing, water-ski jumping and trampolining.

Cameras will follow the celebrities every step of the way and four training documentaries charting their progress will be broadcast on Channel 4 and E4 in the run-up to the live nine-day event.

During the competition the celebrities will not only battle to win a coveted gold medal, but will also compete on behalf of their chosen charities, and their professional pride.

After all, who could forget Bobby Davro's belly flop in the first series - and Charlie Dimmock's leotard in the second?

The pressure will be on as every night they compete before a live audience and under the critical eye of a team of international standard judges.

And when they're not racing or wrestling, the celebrities will live together in a purpose-built athletes' village in Sheffield.
