Angel Of The North to 'visit' Chatsworth

ONE of the nation's most celebrated and admired pieces of public art - the Angel Of The North - is to find a temporary new home in the heart of the Chatsworth estate.

But countryside guardians needn't panic too much.

The cast iron, life-size maquette of Antony Gormley's world-renowned work, which greets motorists on the A1 at Gateshead, will be one of the star attractions of Beyond Limits, the monumental sculpture exhibition held each autumn at the Peak District beauty spot. A maquette - the French word for scale model - is a preliminary model or rough draft of a finished architectural work or a sculpture, used to visualise and test shapes and ideas without incurring the cost and effort of producing a full-scale product.

Several maquettes were produced during the development of Angel.

One life-size model from which the sculpture was created was sold at Sotheby's for just over 2m last July.

The example at Chatsworth between September 14 until November 1 is another cast from the limited edition.

Beyond Limits also acts as Sotheby's leading outdoor selling exhibition and Gormley's Angel will be joined in the 105-acre garden by up to 20 modern and contemporary works from leading international sculptors.

In the past three years the show has drawn thousands of art lovers, collectors and casual visitors. All exhibits will be on display from 11am to 6pm each day.
