Ancient books on display

GRAMMAR school books originating from a monks’ refuge are the stars of a unique exhibition in South Yorkshire.

Visitors to Worsbrough Library in Worsbrough, near Barnsley, from March 2 to 10, can see the books which date from 1550 to 1708.

The exhibition includes collections which belonged to Worsbrough Grammar School and the books are believed to have come from Monk Bretton Priory, many of whose monks retired to the Worsbrough area following Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries.

Notable local families have also donated books to the display, which moves to Barnsley Central Library from March 12 to 16.
