Amy on mission to bring cats to UK
Amy Harrison who is bringing three cats from Greece to Sheffield
ANIMAL lover Amy Harrison is on a mission to save three cats she fears will be killed in Greece – and is appealing for help from Star readers to bring them safely to South Yorkshire.
Amy moved from Sheffield Lane Top to the Greek island of Rhodes with her parents when she was aged 12.
But now the former pupil at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary, Sheffield Lane Top, is returning to the city of her birth – and desperately wants to bring back the animals with her.
While living in Greece Amy has rescued several animals including a horse, a donkey, two dogs and three cats. She has managed to find homes for the dogs, horse and donkey but has had no luck with the cats.
If she leaves them behind she says they will die.
Amy said: “Animal welfare in Greece is not enforced and I cannot leave them behind because they could very easily be shot, poisoned, hanged or even drowned, which is unfortunately an everyday occurrence.
“I need to bring them to the UK where they are more likely to get homes.”
Amy needs help with funds for passports, vaccines, microchips and travel costs.
She said: “The most economical route will be from Rhodes to Amsterdam, then on to the Hook of Holland by road and then by boat from there to Harwich. The estimated cost is 1,300 euros and I need help raising it.”
Once the cats are back in the UK Amy will look to find them new homes.
She said: “Garfield, a fat laid-back soul who loves to play, would be a great family pet. He is about five years old and was found as a small kitten crying all alone having lost his mum.
“Nelly is a very affectionate cat who will sit and lick you for hours.
“She is five years old and was found in the middle of the road when she was no bigger than your hand and was syringe-fed to keep her alive and well.
“Badger is six and was born outside my house from a stray but was taken away by her mother.
“When I found her again she had an eye disease from which she lost both her eyes and has been completely blind ever since.”

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 06:58 PMThere are already too many cats in this country, wiping out the bird population. I also put bird food out in hangers, but as soon as I do, half a dozen cats come patrolling up and down on the wall behind the tree. Now, hardly any birds come.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 04:41 PM#6, I see that you are still a Moron but I don't hold that against you, as for rascist horses, I have a black one and a white one, two browns and an Arab...None are rascist as I know, but they just don't like each other.Post #5, I would expect to get drowned if I defecated on someones garden or destroyed other peoples plants...The owners of Cats should be prosecuted for any damages caused by their felines...maybe that may create a country of responsible pet owners rather than the irresponsible ones we currently have..

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 03:02 PMI live on Rhodes, I love cats and I've helped several times in the past Rhodes Animal Welfare Organization. It is false that cats in Rhodes get shot, poisoned or drowned. Quite the opposite. The story is a complete false. Someone is looking for easy money.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 at 06:24 AM"Amy needs help with funds for passports, vaccines, microchips and travel costs.... Get a job!....In the UK the estimated number of cats not including feral cats is around 12 million that plus an estimated 1.5 million strays cause untold damage to the ecology through the killing of wildlife. Estimates of how many creatures are killed by cats each year vary significantly...The most recent figures are from the Mammal Society, which estimates that the UK's cats catch up to 275 million prey items a year of which 55 million are birds. This is the number of prey items that were known to have been caught; we don't know how many more the cats caught, but didn't bring home, or how many escaped but subsequently died...The most frequently caught birds, according to the Mammal Society, are probably (in order) house sparrows, blue tits, blackbirds and starlings...The damage cats do to others gardens is also cause for concern as they are no less than vermin!..
