PEOPLE might be living longer these days - but there are still not many couples who can boast of having celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.
It is 70 years today since Syd and Mary Dye stepped down the aisle of St Mary’s Church at Sprotbrough and walked back up it as man and wife.
The couple held their celebrations on Sunday at a Retford hotel with a party for 15 family and friends. Sadly thoughts were for their younger daughter, Jennifer, who died only a few weeks ago after a long illness.
Mr Dye, who is 91, is a retired train driver and for much of their married life Mrs Dye, now 90, ran a grocery shop in Bentley Road.
When the pair retired they moved to Rossington but in recent years decided to reside at The Laurels care home on Thorne Road, from where Mr Dye still occasionally strolls into the town centre.
