You can’t beat a bit of pre-season optimism. Like being asked on Twitter the other day whether I thought Rotherham were on for a third successive promotion - to the Premier League!
Thankfully I fought shy of my initial response. Who but promotion king Steve Evans thought the Millers were on for another leap up the scale last season?
It’s amazing what momentum can do. A dozen or so signings later, who am I to say what Rotherham can or can’t do? Or the bookies who have them down
for the drop! Now that is something I would bet against. Back down in League One, relegated Barnsley and Doncaster are predictably rated play-off contenders. On what basis with Barnsley is hard to tell in that Danny Wilson, having stripped out most of his squad, is still assembling almost an entirely new one. No disrespect to the Reds or a highly regarded manager but, for me, Donny are a safer punt for all the deflation over the collapse of the John Ryan-Louis Tomlinson takeover.
As for Chesterfield, it seems the bookies are as confused as everyone else with their mid-table assessment. A cash squeeze on strengthening might suggest a sudden stagnation after the high of promotion. But just how good is the team that did it? Much as I’m suspicious of pre-season friendlies, the Spireites have beaten Aston Villa.
You never know in this game. And thank heavens for that.
